Renovation Resolutions for 2020? Top Tips

If you are still keen to make some positive changes for the year that lies ahead, it is never too late to make a New Years Resolution. It is not as if you need it to be January to make changes, but with so many people opting to be more positive with their life at this time, you can see why many people are proactive in the opening months of the year.

Also, it can be quite cold or damp in January, so a lot of people like to make a resolution that allows them to stay warm and dry indoors! While many decisions involve personal change, you can also create professional changes. If you are a landlord, the start of the year is often a great time to make changes to your rental property. Similarly, if you plan on selling your home in 2020, property renovations may provide the impetus to improve the value of your home and connect with likely buyers.

We are pleased to say we have many local landlords and vendors improve their home, and we have some top tips for people with renovation resolutions for 2020.

Try to be inspired before you start the process

A major flaw in many people’s renovation plans is not having a clear idea of what they want to do or achieve. You don’t need to transform the property into a work of art, but it helps to find inspiration as to what you want to make.

Having a plan ensures you have a focus, and helps you to keep working. If you don’t have a plan, it is a lot easier to stop working or lose enthusiasm for the project. A lot of homeowners have diminished their property value through inadequate quality home improvements, or by not completing a project. You can avoid this by being inspired and making sure you are motivated to complete the project.

Know your budget and stick to it

Having a budget in place is vital for renovation work. If you plan on selling or letting property, consider how much you are happy (and able) to spend to receive a return on your investment. Property renovations help you obtain a more substantial rental fee or a higher sales price.

Not all renovations provide the same benefit. If you are looking to add value to your property, make sure you undertake which will increase value. Adding a bedroom, a bathroom or improving your boiler are enhancements which add value to a property. Adding a hot-tub may make your home more hospitable and allow you to relax at home, but it may not provide you with a financial return.

Other renovation resolutions to bear in mind include:

  • Unless you are skilled, experienced and have the time to do the work, hire a professional
  • Allow leeway for problems
  • Make informed decisions and stick to your plans

“We think home renovations are an excellent way to add value to a property, and they are an ideal activity for New Years Resolutions,” said Thomas Morris Sawtry Branch Manager Tom Mollett. “However, not every project is the same or offers the same returns.
